Seed Balls Sowing in Malamanjanur hill on 10 Nov 2019
On 10.Nov.2019 Sunday, Responsible Citizens iYakkam with the Local village volunteers organised & sown seed balls containing varieties of trees' seeds on top of the malamanjanur hills.
We chose the malamanjanur hill in this region( southern part of Thiruvannamalai district) , though there are no of hills close by, this is the only hill in the region without much big trees growing & only Lemon grass kind of grass known in local Tamizh language as "manjam pillu " . This grass smells like lemon when it is squeezed. The name of the hill itself is derived after this grass.
Main challenge is that for cutting these grass for thatched roofing purposes some people in the malamanjanur village burn the grasses every year. So most of the trees available atop the hills too get burnt & die in the process resulting in barren hills in summer months. Only during rains, some rivulets flow down the hills but no condensation takes place due to lack of trees to cool the hill.
So we organised seed balls made by young students of Panchayat Union Middle school, Malayanoor Chekkadi. RCi thanks the School Head master, teachers & students for their invaluable efforts in making about 5000 seed balls. We took it to the hills with the help of college student Mr. Chandru from Malayanoor.
Farmer Mr. Selva kumar & his young friends from the 6th & 7 th standard students like young muniyan, subash, devendran & many youths like Ashok, Ganapathi, Dhamodaran, Lakshmanan, Ezhumalai, Selvaraj, Ramesh & others participated voluntarily .
RCi wanted local people living around the hill to participate as they are the direct beneficiaries & we are doing this activity not just for planting trees but inculcating a responsible feeling for the environment.
Today's scenario of drought was man made as the society in the last 50 years in the villages too gradually withdrew from preserving nature as people started behaving protecting-preserving nature is the responsibility of the Government. Everything people expect the government to do, where the collective responsibility of the people towards the society diminished.
In Responsible Citizens iYakkam we strongly believe that only Responsible citizens can get a Responsible Government & responsibility taking politicians. We want to create a society where every citizen be like a tree, live for not just for self but for others too. This is the reason for keeping a tree as the symbol of RCi.
Young Minds who joined the seed balls sowing event were very eager & largely satisfied that they are doing their bit to bring a significant change in the society. Enthusiasm was reverberating throughout the hill.
Our slogan for Trees on Every Hill " Plant trees atop the hill to build a dam for clouds " was chanted by every member who participated. It would have been heard even in the near by Sathanur Dam which is visible from the top of Malamanjanur hill.
Every nook & corner boys planted seed balls. Some places where the soil was loose, some men used the mini hand excavator to remove the soil & planted the seed balls too.
Mr. Selvakumar reported on 11 th morning is that there on top of the hills it rained in the early morning as a blessing to our sincere efforts from the Mother Nature.
Malayanoor chekkadi spiritual activist Mr. Ashok Kumar was the chief coordinator for the event. He ensured that every one's stomach is filled with lovely food he made from his house itself & served everyone with love. RCi specially want to Mr. Ashok kumar, his brother Mr. Sathish, Ms. Priya Sathish, Malayanoor chekkadi tree activist Mr. Thirupathi, Mr. Sangeeth in taking part & sharing responsibility for a greener future.
On the 2nd stage on the same hill, we are planning to plant pothu trees mainly Alaa maram ( banyan tree branch ) poovarasu after pits are dig by the locals.
